The history of the Fisher Space Pen

During the early NASA missions, astronauts used pencils. For the Gemini project in 1965, 34 mechanical pencils were purchased at a total cost of $4,382.50, which caused public outcry. Paul S. Fisher of Fisher Pen Co. developed a ballpoint pen with a pressurised ink cartridge entirely at his own expense – around $1 million – without any funding from NASA.

The new pen functioned in a weightless environment, underwater and at temperatures ranging from –34°C to +120°C. Following rigorous testing, in 1967 NASA equipped the Apollo astronauts with these pens. Around 400 were purchased at a price of US$6 each. In February 1969, the Soviet Union also purchased 100 Fisher pens and 1,000 refills for the Soyuz spaceflights. To this day, American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts still use these pens.
