Design and Ink

The body is made of brass and steel. The tip of the cartridge is a tungsten carbide ball.

The ink is thixotropic—it is solid in its normal state and liquefies only when writing. The refill contains a pressurized nitrogen gas cartridge that pushes the hermetically sealed ink. It writes up to three times longer than standard ink.

History of the Fisher Space Pen

During NASA's early missions, astronauts used pencils. For the Gemini program in 1965, NASA purchased mechanical pencils at a cost of $128.89 each—an expense that caused public outcry.

Paul S. Fisher of Fisher Pen Co. developed a ballpoint pen suitable for the unique environment of space, without funding from NASA. The company invested about $1 million of its own funds, then patented and launched the product on the market.

In 1967, after rigorous testing, NASA equipped the astronauts of the Apollo program with these pens. About 400 were purchased at a price of $6 each.

In February 1969, the Soviet Union also purchased 100 Fisher pens and 1,000 refills for use on Soyuz spaceflights. To this day, both American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts continue to use these pens.
