History of the Fisher Space Pen
In the early days of space missions, NASA astronauts used pencils. In 1965, Paul S. Fisher designed a pen that works in zero gravity, underwater, and at temperatures ranging from -34ยฐC to +120ยฐC. The company invested about $1 million of its own funds, without any funding from NASA.
After rigorous testing, NASA approved the pen for the Apollo missions in 1967. The media reported that approximately 400 pens were purchased at a price of $6 each. In February 1969, the Soviet Union also purchased 100 pens and 1,000 refills for the Soyuz spaceflights. To this day, astronauts and cosmonauts continue to use Fisher pens.
