The Story Behind the Fisher Space Pen
During NASA's early missions, astronauts used pencils. In 1965, Paul S. Fisher of Fisher Pen Co. developed a pressurized ballpoint pen that works in zero gravity, underwater, and at extreme temperatures.
The company invested about 1 million U.S. dollars of its own funds, patented the product, and offered it to NASA. After rigorous testing, in 1967, NASA managers equipped the astronauts on the Apollo mission with these pens.
In February 1969, the Soviet Union also purchased 100 Fisher pens and 1,000 refills for the Soyuz spaceflights. To this day, both American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts use these pens.
