Design and Technology of the Fisher Space Pen

The History of the Fisher Space Pen and NASA
During the early NASA missions, astronauts used mechanical pencils. For the Gemini program in 1965, 34 mechanical pencils were purchased for a total of $4,382.50—about $128.89 each. This caused public outcry, and NASA sought alternatives.
Paul S. Fisher of Fisher Pen Co. developed a pressurized-cartridge ballpoint pen entirely with private funds—about 1 million U.S. dollars—without any funding from NASA. The pen functioned in zero gravity, underwater, and at extreme temperatures. After being patented, the product was offered to NASA in 1965.
In 1967, after rigorous testing, NASA managers agreed to equip the Apollo program astronauts with these pens. Approximately 400 pens were purchased at a price of $6 each. In February 1969, the Soviet Union also purchased 100 pens and 1,000 refills for the Soyuz spaceflights—previously, their cosmonauts had used pencils. To this day, both American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts use Fisher pens.
