History of the Fisher Space Pen

During NASA's early missions, astronauts used pencils. For Project Gemini in 1965, mechanical pencils were purchased at a price of $128.89 each, which caused public outcry. NASA immediately began looking for an alternative.

Paul S. Fisher of Fisher Pen Co. developed a ballpoint pen with a pressurized ink cartridge that works in zero gravity, underwater, and at extreme temperatures. The company invested about $1 million of its own funds, without funding from NASA, patented the product, and brought it to market.

In 1967, after rigorous testing, NASA equipped the Apollo astronauts with these pens. Approximately 400 pens were purchased at a price of $6 each. In February 1969, the Soviet Union also purchased 100 pens and 1,000 refills for the Soyuz missions. To this day, American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts use the Fisher Space Pen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Fisher Space Pen Police Pro write underwater?

Yes, the Fisher Space Pen Police Pro is designed to write underwater. The pen uses a pressurized nitrogen cartridge that forces the ink toward the tip regardless of the conditions. This makes it reliable not only in rain or damp conditions, but also when fully submerged. It is this feature that sets it apart from standard pens.

What is thixotropic ink, and why is it important?

Thixotropic ink is solid in its normal state and liquefies only when writing—that is, when the tip moves across a surface. This means the pen doesn’t leak, spill, or leave stains. In addition, this ink lasts up to three times longer than standard ink. It is precisely this technology that makes the Fisher Space Pen exceptionally reliable for everyday use.

What refills are compatible with the Fisher Space Pen Police Pro?

The Fisher Space Pen Police Pro comes with an SPR4 refill in black with a medium line width. The pen is compatible with all refills from the Fisher Space Pen PR series. This means that when the refill runs out, you can easily find a suitable replacement without having to buy a new pen.

Is this pen a good gift for a man?

Absolutely. The Fisher Space Pen Police Pro comes in a gift box and is an excellent gift choice for men in various professions—police officers, military personnel, doctors, lawyers, engineers, or business leaders. It combines practicality, durability, and an interesting story, making it a great conversation starter. At Dulotec.COM, you’ll find this pen at a great price.

What is the warranty on the Fisher Space Pen Police Pro?

Every Fisher Space Pen is precision-assembled and hand-tested. The manufacturer offers a lifetime warranty against all manufacturing defects. This is a testament to the product’s build quality and long-term reliability.

Why is the Fisher Space Pen associated with NASA's space programs?

Paul S. Fisher developed the pressurized-cartridge pen in response to the need for a reliable writing instrument in space. Unlike the pencil, which had been used previously, the new pen works in zero gravity, underwater, and at extreme temperatures. NASA adopted the pens for the Apollo missions after rigorous testing in 1967. Later, the Soviet Union also purchased the Fisher Space Pen for its Soyuz missions.

Can this pen be used in the car or in a everyday bag?

Yes, the Fisher Space Pen Police Pro is compact and fits easily into a wallet, organizer, or pocket. The reinforced clip allows you to attach it to the edge of a pocket or backpack. The pen doesn’t leak in summer temperatures and doesn’t freeze in winter, making it a reliable companion for any situation.
