Construction and materials
The barrel is made of blue anodised aluminium. The internal parts are made of brass and steel, and the tip of the refill is a tungsten carbide ball.
The cartridge contains a pressurised nitrogen gas cartridge. A small metal cylinder presses against the hermetically sealed special ink β ensuring the pen writes in all conditions.
The clip allows it to be easily attached to the edge of a pocket or rucksack.
An excellent gift for men and women
Fisher Space Pens are a practical and long-lasting choice for a gift. They are suitable for teachers, doctors, lawyers, military personnel, police officers, business leaders and school leavers.
They donβt leak in summer or freeze in winter. π― You can rely on them both in the car and in your everyday bag.
History of the Fisher Space Pen
During NASAβs early missions, astronauts used pencils. For the Gemini programme in 1965, NASA purchased 34 mechanical pencils at a total cost of $4,382.50 β around $128.89 each.
This caused public outcry, and NASA began looking for an alternative. Paul S. Fisher of Fisher Pen Co. developed a pressurised-cartridge pen that works in zero gravity, underwater and at extreme temperatures.
The company invested around US$1 million of its own funds, without any funding from NASA. In 1967, following rigorous testing, NASA approved the pens for the Apollo programme.
Around 400 pens were purchased at a price of US$6 each. In February 1969, the Soviet Union also purchased 100 pens and 1,000 refills for the Soyuz missions. To this day, American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts continue to use these pens.
