The Fisher AG7 was the pen chosen by NASA for the Apollo 7 mission in 1968 following two years of intensive testing. Since then, it has been standard equipment on every manned space flight.
The design and construction have remained unchanged for more than 50 years. The pen you buy today is identical to the one taken to the Moon in 1969.

The history of the Fisher Space Pen
During the early NASA missions, astronauts used pencils. For the Gemini programme, NASA purchased 34 mechanical pencils at a total cost of $4,382.50 β around $128.89 each. The expenditure caused public outcry.
Paul S. Fisher of Fisher Pen Co. developed a new pen entirely with private funds β around $1 million of his own investment, without any funding from NASA. The pressurised ink cartridge functions in zero gravity, underwater, in liquids and at temperatures ranging from β34Β°C to +120Β°C.
NASA tested the pens rigorously and, in 1967, approved them for the Apollo missions. Around 400 pens were purchased at a price of US$6 each for the Apollo programme. In February 1969, the Soviet Union also purchased 100 Fisher pens and 1,000 refills for the Soyuz spaceflights. To this day, American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts continue to use these pens.
