Features and Technology

The body is made of brass and steel, and the tip of the refill is a tungsten carbide ball. The ink is thixotropic—it is solid at rest but liquefies when writing. The pen does not skip or leak, and it writes up to three times longer than regular ink.

The refill contains a pressurized nitrogen gas cartridge that pushes the hermetically sealed ink. This allows for writing at any angle, underwater, and in zero gravity.

The History of the Fisher Space Pen

During NASA’s early missions, astronauts used pencils. For the Gemini project, NASA purchased 34 mechanical pencils at a total cost of $4,382.50—about $128.89 each. This sparked a public debate about the costs, and NASA began looking for alternatives.

Paul S. Fisher of Fisher Pen Co. developed a pressurized ballpoint pen without funding from NASA. The company invested about $1 million of its own funds, patented the product, and brought it to market. The new pen worked in zero gravity, underwater, and at extreme temperatures.

Fisher offered the pens to NASA in 1965. After rigorous testing, they were issued to the Apollo astronauts in 1967. About 400 pens were purchased at a price of $6 each. In February 1969, the Soviet Union also purchased 100 Fisher pens and 1,000 refills for the Soyuz missions. To this day, astronauts and cosmonauts continue to use them.
