The Story Behind the Space Pen

During NASA’s early missions, astronauts wrote with pencils. For the Gemini project, the agency purchased 34 mechanical pencils for a total of $4,382.50—about $128.89 each. This sparked widespread public outrage, and NASA sought an alternative.

Paul S. Fisher of Fisher Pen Co. developed a pen with a pressurized cartridge that works in zero gravity, underwater, and at extreme temperatures. The company invested about $1 million of its own funds, without funding from NASA.

In 1967, after rigorous testing, NASA approved the pens for the Apollo program missions. Approximately 400 pens were purchased at a price of $6 each. In February 1969, the Soviet Union also purchased 100 pens and 1,000 refills for the Soyuz spaceflights. To this day, both American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts continue to use these pens.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what temperatures does the Fisher Space Pen Backpacker work?

The Fisher Space Pen Backpacker works reliably at temperatures ranging from -34°C to +120°C. This makes it suitable for use in extreme cold or heat, where ordinary pens stop writing. The special thixotropic ink under nitrogen pressure ensures consistent performance across the entire temperature range.

Can the Fisher Space Pen write underwater?

Yes. The Fisher Space Pen Backpacker is designed to write underwater, in zero gravity, and at any angle. The cartridge is hermetically sealed and contains a pressurized nitrogen cartridge, which allows for writing even under extreme conditions. These features have been proven in actual space missions.

What is thixotropic ink, and why is it important?

Thixotropic ink is a special type of ink that is solid under normal conditions but liquefies only when subjected to physical force—in this case, when writing. This means that the pen doesn’t leak or leave stains, even if carried without a cap in a bag or pocket. In addition, it writes up to three times longer than regular ink.

What type of refill does the Fisher Space Pen Backpacker use, and can it be replaced?

The pen comes with an SPR4 refill in black with a medium line width. The refill is replaceable, and the pen is compatible with all SPR series cartridges. Replacing the refill is easy and requires no special tools.

What are the dimensions of the Fisher Space Pen Backpacker?

When folded, the pen is 10 cm long, making it extremely compact. When extended, it reaches 13.7 cm—a comfortable size for writing. Thanks to its small size, it easily fits in a wallet, organizer, or backpack pocket.

What's included in the package when you buy it?

The set includes a silver Fisher Space Pen BP Backpacker with a mounting ring and a plastic gift box. This makes it ready to give as a gift right out of the box, without the need for additional wrapping.

What is the warranty on the Fisher Space Pen?

Every Fisher Space Pen comes with a lifetime warranty against all manufacturing defects. Before leaving the factory, each pen is precision-assembled and hand-tested. This warranty reflects the company’s confidence in the quality of its products—a quality proven in actual space missions by NASA and the Soviet Union.
