Design and Technology

The body is made of brass and steel. The tip of the refill is a tungsten carbide ball. The refill contains a pressurized nitrogen gas cartridge—a small metal cylinder that pushes the hermetically sealed ink, allowing for writing at any angle.

History of the Fisher Space Pen

During NASA’s early missions, astronauts used mechanical pencils. For the Gemini program, the agency purchased 34 mechanical pencils at a total cost of $4,382.50—about $128.89 each. This sparked public outcry, and NASA began looking for an alternative.

Paul S. Fisher of Fisher Pen Co. developed a new ballpoint pen entirely with his own funds—about 1 million U.S. dollars—without any funding from NASA. The new pressurized ink cartridge worked in zero gravity, underwater, and at extreme temperatures.

In 1965, Fisher proposed the pens to NASA. After rigorous testing, the agency equipped the Apollo program astronauts with them in 1967. About 400 pens were purchased at a price of $6 each. In February 1969, the Soviet Union also purchased 100 pens and 1,000 refills for the Soyuz missions. To this day, both American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts use these pens.
