Description

Fisher Space Pen CLUTCH – a pen designed for extreme conditions

The Fisher Space Pen CLUTCH was originally designed for the oil and gas industry. Its robust construction makes it reliable in the harshest working conditions.

It writes on an oil rig, in the desert and in polar cold. It never stops working, whatever the conditions.

Construction and materials

The barrel is made from black anodised aluminium – lightweight yet durable. The hexagonal cross-section of the grip ensures a firm hold even with wet hands or when wearing gloves.

  • The construction and finish incorporate brass and steel
  • The tip of the refill is a tungsten carbide ball
  • Compact size – fits easily into a wallet or organiser
  • Clip for attaching to the edge of a pocket or rucksack

Ink technology

The ink is thixotropic – it is solid in its normal state and only liquefies when writing. The pen does not skip or leak.

  • Writes up to 3 times longer than standard ink
  • The refill contains a pressurised nitrogen gas cartridge
  • A small metal cylinder presses against the hermetically sealed ink
  • Works at any angle, including upside down
  • Reliable at temperatures ranging from -34°C to +120°C
  • Works underwater and in zero gravity

Quality and warranty

Every Fisher Space Pen is precision-assembled and hand-tested. It comes with a lifetime guarantee against manufacturing defects.

The perfect gift for men and women

The Fisher Space Pen CLUTCH is a practical and long-lasting gift choice. It is suitable for teachers, doctors, lawyers, politicians, military personnel, police officers, business leaders and school leavers.

History of the Fisher Space Pen

During the early NASA missions, astronauts used pencils. For the Gemini programme in 1965, NASA purchased 34 mechanical pencils at a total cost of $4,382.50 – around $128.89 each. This caused public outcry, and the agency began looking for alternatives.

Paul S. Fisher of Fisher Pen Co. designed a ballpoint pen that worked reliably in the space environment. The company invested around $1 million of its own funds, without any funding from NASA, and subsequently patented the product.

In 1967, following rigorous testing, NASA agreed to equip the Apollo programme’s astronauts with these pens. Around 400 were purchased at a price of 6 dollars each. In February 1969, the Soviet Union also purchased 100 pens and 1,000 refills for the Soyuz spaceflights. Today, both American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts continue to use them.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what temperatures does the Fisher Space Pen CLUTCH work?

The pen operates reliably at temperatures ranging from -34°C to +120°C. This makes it suitable for use in extreme cold and intense heat. It does not freeze in winter or run in summer. The ink is hermetically sealed and protected from temperature fluctuations.

Can the Fisher Space Pen CLUTCH write underwater and in zero gravity?

Yes. The cartridge contains a pressurised nitrogen gas cartridge which forces the ink towards the nib regardless of the pen’s orientation. It writes underwater, in zero gravity and at any angle, including upside down. It is precisely this technology that makes it the choice of NASA astronauts and Russian cosmonauts.

What is thixotropic ink and why is it important?

Thixotropic ink is solid in its normal state and only liquefies when writing, when the tip ball activates it. This means the pen doesn’t leak or run out. The ink is hermetically sealed within the cartridge. It writes up to three times longer than standard ink.

What materials is the CLUTCH pen made from?

The body is made of black anodised aluminium, which makes it both lightweight and durable. The construction and finish incorporate brass and steel. The tip of the cartridge is a tungsten carbide ball – one of the hardest materials used in pens. The hexagonal cross-section of the grip ensures a secure hold even with wet hands or when wearing gloves.

What warranty is offered for the Fisher Space Pen CLUTCH?

Every Fisher Space Pen is precision-assembled and hand-tested before leaving the factory. The product comes with a lifetime guarantee against all manufacturing defects. This is a testament to the quality and reliability the brand has prided itself on for decades.

Is the Fisher Space Pen CLUTCH suitable as a gift?

Yes, the pen comes in a plastic gift box and is ready to give as a present. It is suitable for men and women in various professions – doctors, lawyers, military personnel, police officers, teachers, business leaders and school leavers. It is practical, durable and has an interesting history behind it. You can find it at Dulotec.COM.

What refills are used for the Fisher Space Pen CLUTCH?

The pen uses refills from the Fisher SPR range. The refill included is the SPR4 model with black ink and a medium line width. When it runs out, it can be replaced with another refill from the same series. Fisher SPR refills are widely available and compatible with many of the brand’s models.
