Fisher Space Pen CLUTCH – a pen designed for extreme conditions
The Fisher Space Pen CLUTCH was originally designed for the oil and gas industry. Its robust construction makes it reliable in the harshest working conditions.
It writes on an oil rig, in the desert and in polar cold. It never stops working, whatever the conditions.
Construction and materials
The barrel is made from black anodised aluminium – lightweight yet durable. The hexagonal cross-section of the grip ensures a firm hold even with wet hands or when wearing gloves.
- The construction and finish incorporate brass and steel
- The tip of the refill is a tungsten carbide ball
- Compact size – fits easily into a wallet or organiser
- Clip for attaching to the edge of a pocket or rucksack
Ink technology
The ink is thixotropic – it is solid in its normal state and only liquefies when writing. The pen does not skip or leak.
- Writes up to 3 times longer than standard ink
- The refill contains a pressurised nitrogen gas cartridge
- A small metal cylinder presses against the hermetically sealed ink
- Works at any angle, including upside down
- Reliable at temperatures ranging from -34°C to +120°C
- Works underwater and in zero gravity

History of the Fisher Space Pen
During the early NASA missions, astronauts used pencils. For the Gemini programme in 1965, NASA purchased 34 mechanical pencils at a total cost of $4,382.50 – around $128.89 each. This caused public outcry, and the agency began looking for alternatives.
Paul S. Fisher of Fisher Pen Co. designed a ballpoint pen that worked reliably in the space environment. The company invested around $1 million of its own funds, without any funding from NASA, and subsequently patented the product.
In 1967, following rigorous testing, NASA agreed to equip the Apollo programme’s astronauts with these pens. Around 400 were purchased at a price of 6 dollars each. In February 1969, the Soviet Union also purchased 100 pens and 1,000 refills for the Soyuz spaceflights. Today, both American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts continue to use them.
