The Story Behind the Fisher Space Pen Brand

During NASA’s early missions, astronauts wrote with ordinary pencils. For the Project Gemini program in 1965, 34 mechanical pencils were purchased for a total of $4,382.50—a price that sparked widespread public debate.

In response, NASA sought a better solution. Paul S. Fisher of Fisher Pen Co. developed a pen with a pressurized ink cartridge without funding from NASA. The company invested about $1 million of its own funds.

The new pen works in zero gravity, underwater, in liquids, and at temperatures ranging from -34°C to +120°C. After rigorous testing, in 1967 NASA equipped the astronauts of the Apollo program with these pens—about 400 of them at a price of $6 each.

In February 1969, the Soviet Union also purchased 100 Fisher pens and 1,000 refills for the Soyuz missions. To this day, both American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts use pens of this brand.
