The history of the Fisher Space Pen

During NASA’s early missions, astronauts used pencils. In 1965, for the Project Gemini programme, NASA purchased 34 mechanical pencils at a total cost of $4,382.50 – around $128.89 each.

This sparked widespread public outrage. Paul S. Fisher of Fisher Pen Co. developed a pen capable of functioning in the unique environment of space – without funding from NASA, with the company investing around $1 million of its own funds.
